Zakiti tried to savor the last of her cantaloupe slice, but found herself chewing fast due to excitement. She wiped the juice from her chin, slurped it from her fingertips, and dropped the plate in the recycling bin as she left the cafeteria and made her way across the Training Center toward the Dojo. She threw herself at keeping up her training, taking advantage of the Crusaders' expansive facility during her mandatory training period. While not expected to see active duty, the rules for Faculty changed to require combat training in the wake of the Halbexian incident. An incident I could have prevented. Should have...

In truth, even if Zak broke her oath of compliance and shared the intel gathered by her fellow Yusnexian spies, the warning would have made little difference. Still, the shame she felt at the rememberance ceremony for the fallen students and faculty stuck with Zakiti. In the past, she made decisions that cost lives with the confidence that her choice best served the Yusnexian Imperial Republic. This time, with no choice to make and so many lives lost to preserve an already crumbling treaty, she felt only remorse. A deep, gnawing remorse.

She shook her head, tried to stop thinking for once. She stepped into the dojo, taking a step back as she passed a mirror. A standard uniform reminded her of her days as a soldier, though that attire meant to camouflage the wearer while her slate blue uniform with its silver and orchid accents made her a bit self conscious amongst all the Gamma silver and green. While the flexible armor fufilled its purpose, she felt awkward as the tailoring and highlights showcased certain aspects of her form she never made much of a habit of showing off. Not since her own academy days. Zak looked around, relieved not to see any eyes on her. Stretching before she began her routine, her unique Yusnexian physiology allowed her to bend in smooth, impossible angles. Arms twisted behind her back in a manner nauseating to behold, Zee leaned back until she almost folded and reached for her ankles with the opposite hands. Her knees fell out and she coiled up on the mat as is if preparing to strike, before slithering free of herself. She swayed back and forth as she rose, not unlike a hooded cobra. Way to stay inconspicuous, Zed. May as well smash ice. I think that's how they say it...

Zakiti looked around, put a friendly smile on. A smile she practiced for hours a day during her etiquette courses. "So, anybody care to spar?"

Life back in the Training Center felt like a dream. Though it was becoming increasingly clear to Hyun that he was not the only one who had lived a nightmare. The uniforms were clean, and people still had fitting clothes, but the similarities were there - it was in the eyes of all the Faculty he'd met. Still, old habits ingrained by his three year conscription died hard. It was an active effort to keep to a steady jog rather than moving at a dead sprint.

And the food! Actually having it, being able to eat at his own pace! It almost made up for being a private again. He was technically a Corporal now, though all that meant was that he'd served his time in a place more comparable to prison than a proper army. Looking down at the slices of cantaloupe he'd snagged between the cafeteria and the dojo, he ate quickly, before tossing the rind on the ground. Then he remembered he was indoors, and sheepishly put it in the trash. One good thing was that his training kept the instructors from beating him too badly, though they found other ways to torment the conscripts. It would be a long time before he could actually enjoy a meal.

Regardless, now was time for training! After a minute of stretching to limber up, he hit the heavy bag. Thankfully, he'd managed to keep his form, despite having little time to train - there was a lot of manual labor involved in being a soldier, but very little actual training compared to what he was used to. His mind wandered, as it often did, as he hit the weighted bag with increasing force. Thump. The roar of flames filled his ears. Since he was 'special,' he was volunteered to go in first. There was no time for questions.Thump. Kicking doors. He'd dropped his pack long ago, it was slowing him down. He had to hurry before-- WHAM! The survivor he'd been carrying, barely breathing through the smoke, screamed in his ears as the roof collapsed, crushing them both. It was not the first time he'd been covered in blood. But this time... it left an impression. They managed to retrieve him, but the girl, the horror in his comrades eyes as flesh knit and bone mended in front of them. He was discharged, at last. But it never got easier.

"Would anyone like to spar?"

That got his attention, and his eyes shot over just in time to watch the woman rise from the ground in a motion more like a snake than a human. At least he wasn't the only freak here. Still, his Gamma 5 uniform singled him out among his peers, as not only did it have more adornments, but it was very clearly new. "What?" Was the only thing that he could think to say, picking up the bag he'd knocked over in his reverie before rolling his shoulders. His accent was fresh, again, and very thick as he asked "What are terms?" Might as well embrace the weird. He'd long sinced stepped through the looking glass.

Zak's brow cocked over her almond eyes as the man turned from the heavy bag as it fell to the floor. Her clear, vertical eyelids blinked twice before the barely made up horizontal pair. The man's posture, the way he spoke, caused her toxin glands behind her jaw to swell slightly. Then he paused, asked her for terms in broken English, and gave her the impression of just being misunderstood. Even if a liiiiiittle aggressive.

"If you hit like that, then boxing's out. How about... no powers. Grappling only? Win via tapout. Are you comfortable on the mat?"
Zakiti grinned and extended her hand "I'm Zakiti, by the way. My friends call me Zak." Or they would, if I had any friends. Zakiti waited for the man to return her gesture. When their hands met, she had every intention of taking wrist control at the first opportunity.

It was his turn to be confused, if not more than a little concerned when the woman's eyelids worked vertically, rather than horizontally. Hyun was able to keep his composure, if only just, though he did tense up as the lizard-woman shifted in yet another unnatural way. His years of stress were showing for a moment, then he took a deep breath, mulled over what she said - The difference between Korean and English was making it hard for him, but he got the gist. With a smile, he shook his head and waved one hand.

"No powers. Only... how you say... Repeat?" Hyun raised one hand and tipped it twice with his other hand clenched in a fist, waving it like a metronome after every hit. "Like a swing. I not have powers." Powers would imply usefulness. His was more of a curse, depending on who you asked.

Nodding at the mat with both hands on his hips, he said "In the Korea Army, not much grappling. Might be rusty. Good practice." A little of his competitive spirit shone through as he looked down at her arm. "Good challenge too- ah, Corp- Hyun. Just Hyun."

He stared at her hand for a split second, then looked up at her shoulders, and her eyes. Then he clasped her by the wrist and held it, firmly, giving a quick bow. He remembered belatedly that Americans liked to give handshakes, rather than just a wave or a half-bow, and while his head dipped, he kept his eyes locked on hers for intent, planting his lead foot to help prevent from being thrown. At a glance, he was just a little stronger than she was, and he used that to lock down one of her arms before they began - as good a start as any.
